Fall, 1995. The "lion king." He was the patriarch of the lion pride that ranged within the northeastern part of Chobe National Park. As a Park Development Officer with Botswana's Wildlife Department, I made frequent trips into the protected area. One morning I spotted this lion in what seemed a perfect "Kodak moment." As I prepared to take the photograph, he let out a roar that momentarily stopped my heart and definitely put me in my place. Fortunately, I was in a truck, for walking is not permitted in the park (for obvious reasons.) Photo by Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Susan Ross.
