The Dominican Republic Project
|
In August 2000, I spent four days in the Dominican Republic documenting the experience of two Peace Corps Volunteers. One image from this personal project is featured on the cover of the Peace Corps Coverdell World Wise Schools publication, Insights from the Field. Prior to departure, Mr. Davis contacted Peace Corps staff in Santo Domingo who helped him gain access to Volunteers willing to collaborate with him on the project. He spent three days with Volunteer Heather Lee in the mountainous interior where she was working on a secondary project, constructing latrines in outlying rural communities. One additional day was spent with Volunteer Nandhu Madhava in the coastal town of Samana. Despite the fact that Mr. Davis had never met the Volunteers prior to arriving, he quickly integrated himself into their networks of family, friends, and counterparts. Using his basic Spanish and cross-cultural communication skills, he put his subjects at ease and was able to obtain high-quality images of their life and work. |
