Beginning of Rainy Season, 1994. Marabou storks are among the largest of storks and, arguably, the most ugly. They are bareheaded and bare-necked with fleshy pouch on their foreneck. These Marabou Storks have gathered around a small pool where water has collected after some of the first rains of the coming rainy season. Once the rains begin the dry grasses will quickly change from yellow to green. This photograph captures that transition. It also shows storm clouds gathering on the horizon promising more rain before day's end. Photo by Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Susan Ross.
