Kiribati - (Pronounced Kitty' bas, NOT Keery' batty!) Kiribati is a small independent country located in the Central Pacific Ocean where the International Date Line meets the Equator. The population is about 75,000 people. The country is composed of 33 low-lying atolls, not all of which are inhabited. The national borders encompass over 2 million square miles of water (the size of the continental US), which the total land area of the country is only 264 square miles (the size of New York City). The land in the country almost doubles when the tide goes out! With the highest point in Kiribati being only 7 feet above sea level, the threat of global warming and the sea level raising is very real. Already tides are getting higher and causing damage. With predictions of a 10 foot increase in sea level, what will happen to the country and the people who live there?
